A President's Message from SEAOC President Rafael Sabelli
By Rafael Sabelli, SE, SEAOC President 2020
I began my year as SEAOC President at an excellent convention hosted by SEAOCC. I enjoyed the chance to see the new fellows recognized, and to learn form the technical presentations. I looked forward to a similar experience in Maui in 2020. SEAOC’s return to Maui is going to have to wait.
The SEAOC Board of Directors (myself included) has decided that the planned convention in September cannot go forward without undue risk to the health of our members, and perhaps also to the financial health of the association. Instead, we will go forward with a scaled-back virtual convention that includes the normal, yearly business, and as well as some technical presentations. (The details are only just being discussed.)
The convention committee has done a fantastic job in planning the Maui convention. The virtual convention will draw on the technical content that has been solicited and developed for the 2020 convention. Additionally, we are in discussions with the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort to have our planned convention there in a future year. (The hotel plans to be open in September will honor the reservations made for this year for the SEAOC convention at the block rates.)
I want to recognize the hard work of the convention committee, and their willingness to help the association achieve this necessary change in direction. These committee members are:
- Richard Dreyer - Chair
- Kevin Moore - Sports
- Melissa Vickery - Mobile App and Web Site
- Dan Bech - Exhibitors and Sponsors
- Holly Razzano - Registration
- Dave Martin - Social Events
- Joyce Feng - Treasurer
- Bill Tremayne - Technical
- Sandra Jung - Publicity
- Jenny Van Truong - YMF
- Wayne Low Chair - Emeritus
The 2020 SEAOC Convention is Going Virtual
Members of SEAOC & colleagues,
By now, I expect that you have read the President's Message from Rafael Sabelli in SEAOC Talk. If so, you are hearing this message here again. As with just about every other live event planned for this summer and fall, we have made the difficult decision that the planned convention in Maui this September cannot go forward without undue risk to the health of our members, and perhaps also to the financial health of the association.
SEAOC's return to Maui is going to have to wait until another year, and we do intend to return there. Instead, we will go forward with a scaled-back virtual convention that includes the normal, yearly business and includes some technical presentations. (The details are only just beginning to be discussed.)
The convention committee so far has done a fantastic job in planning the Maui convention and I can't thank them enough for their hard work to date. Our job is not over, however. In the months ahead, we will be navigating through uncharted waters of putting together a virtual convention experience that we hope you all will participate in and hopefully enjoy finding some of the value a live convention provides.
We are in discussions with the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort to have our planned convention there in a future year. For those of you who have made reservations in the 2020 Convention room block, the Hyatt Regency Maui will hold those reservations for you at the same rate you booked.
