Probabilistic, Performance-Based Seismic Assessment and Design Guidance

Description:  FEMA, through the ATC-58 Project series, has sponsored development of a probabilistic method for assessment of earthquake impacts including repair costs, repair time, casualties, unsafe placarding, and environmental measures.  Development is nearing completion, resulting in updated fragility and consequence data, assessment of the performance of code-conforming buildings, guidance on the use of performance-based information in seismic design, and products to assist in the communication of performance-based information to stakeholders and decision-makers.

Seismic Evaluation Older Concrete Frame, Frame-Wall, and Bearing Wall Buildings for Collapse Potential

Description:  The seismic life safety risk from older concrete buildings, particularly frames, is well known.  FEMA, through the ATC-78 Project series, has sponsored development of a simplified method to estimate the probability of collapse that can be used to rank older concrete buildings for the purpose of identifying the truly dangerous ones.  Development is nearly complete, resulting in an evaluation methodology that building jurisdictions will be able to use to prioritize mandatory mitigation, or to select a subset of high risk buildings for mandatory mitigation.

Prestandard for Seismic Assessment and Retrofit of One- and Two-Family Dwellings

Description:  CEA and FEMA, through the ATC-110 Project series, has sponsored development of prestandard for seismic assessment and prescriptive retrofit of cripple wall, house over garage, and hillside vulnerabilities in residential dwellings.  Although simple for the purposes of implementation, methodologies are being developed using best available analytical tools and performance objectives consistent with current seismic codes and standards.  After more than two years of work, the project has generated an extensive set of nonlinear analysis results for wood light-frame dwellings, and developed draft prestandard provisions and prescriptive retrofit solutions.

Improved Seismic Design of Nonstructural Components and Systems

Description:  NIST, through the ATC-120 Project, has sponsored a detailed investigation into the basis of nonstructural seismic design provisions, and the development of recommended improvements with the largest impact to public safety and economic welfare.  Development is nearing completion, resulting in a consensus-based set of nonstructural performance objectives, recommended improvements to nonstructural code provisions, and recommendations for the development and use of floor response spectra in seismic design of nonstructural components and systems.

Example Application Guide for ASCE/SEI 41-13 Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings

Description:  FEMA, through the ATC-124 Project series, and with assistance from SEAOC, has sponsored development of an example application guide offering guidance on the interpretation and use of ASCE/SEI 41 13 covering key topics and common situations where additional guidance was considered necessary for clarifying the intent or application of the provisions.  Development is nearing completion, resulting in a set of illustrative examples (and commentary) on issues related to performance objectives, data collection, materials testing and knowledge factors, primary versus secondary components, overturning, foundation design, soil-structure interaction, Tier 1 and Tier 2 evaluations, and design of material-specific systems including wood light-frame, steel moment frame, concrete shear wall, and unreinforced masonry systems.
